Mauritius: The Astonishing Underwater Waterfall

Mauritius, an idyllic island nation in the Indian Ocean, is renowned for its breathtaking beaches and crystal - clear waters. However, there is a hidden wonder that lies beneath the surface - an incredible "underwater waterfall" that defies belief.

This unique phenomenon is actually an optical illusion. It is located off the southwestern tip of Mauritius, near Le Morne Brabant. The "waterfall" effect is created by the movement of sand and silt deposits on the sea floor. Strong underwater currents drag these sediments, and when viewed from above, such as from a helicopter or a satellite image, it gives the impression of a massive waterfall plunging into the depths of the ocean. The white - hued sand against the darker backdrop of the deeper sea creates a strikingly realistic waterfall - like scene.

To witness this amazing sight, tourists often opt for helicopter rides. These flights offer a bird's - eye view of the underwater wonder, along with the beautiful coastal scenery of Mauritius. The surrounding area of Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, adds to the charm. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, runaway slaves found refuge in the isolated and rugged cliffs here, and their oral traditions have made this place a symbol of the fight for freedom. The underwater waterfall, combined with the historical and natural beauty of the region, makes Mauritius an even more alluring destination for travelers seeking extraordinary experiences.
