Carney Leads New Canadian Cabinet in Inauguration

Local time on May 13th, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney led his new cabinet to be sworn in at the Government House in Ottawa. The new cabinet consists of 28 ministers, reducing the number of ministers from 39 in the Trudeau era to 28, aiming for a more efficient operation.

 

Several key figures who participated in the negotiations with the United States were retained2. For example, Dominic LeBlanc, who has dealt with US Secretary of Commerce Rutnik in recent weeks, serves as the minister in charge of Canada - US trade affairs2. François - Philippe Champagne continues to serve as the finance minister2. Meanwhile, former Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly has been transferred to the position of industry minister, and Anita Anand has taken over as the new foreign minister2. In addition, former journalist Evan Solomon has entered parliament for the first time and has been appointed as the minister of artificial intelligence4.

 

Carney has promised to reduce public spending and cut taxes4. He also pledged to remove all trade barriers among the ten provinces by July 1st4. He said that the new government will focus on strengthening the economy and building a new economic and security relationship with the United States4.
